The Galleria's New Restaurants Aren't Arriving This Fall. They're Arriving on an Office Lease Schedule.

Ask around the Galleria this month and you'll hear the same rundown of names: Sparrow Italia, The Henry, Buck & Rider, Handies Douzo. All of it filed under "coming this fall" in the last year of press releases. What almost nobody mentions is that "this fall" applies to maybe half of them, and one signed tenant isn't projected to open until fall 2027. The restaurants aren't rolling out because Uptown got hungrier. They're rolling out because two banks and a credit union signed office leases, and the kitchens are following the same construction calendar as the desks.

That's the part worth understanding if you live within walking distance of Post Oak Boulevard and want to know when you'll actually be able to get a table, not just when the announcement dropped.

What's already open

If you want new food right now, the answer isn't a headline. It's Wagyu House, which opened May 1 in the former Peli Peli space at 5085 Westheimer, an all-you-can-eat Japanese barbecue concept from Chubby Group with four pricing tiers, silver through black diamond, running roughly $55 to $100 depending on the grade of wagyu. It's real, it's open, and it's the only name in this whole cycle you can eat at tonight.

Everything else on the "new to the Galleria" list is still under construction, and the completion dates don't line up the way the press coverage makes it sound.

The office lease is the real permit

Two blocks north of the mall, the 17-acre campus at 2000 Post Oak Boulevard, formerly known as Post Oak Central, is being rebuilt as Central Park Post Oak by Midway alongside investment partners 3Edgewood and Parkway. The redevelopment has landed more than 182,000 square feet of new office leases since April 2024, including a roughly 125,000-square-foot headquarters commitment from TDECU in Central Park One and a 20,000-square-foot full-floor lease from BBVA in Central Park Two. Those office deals are the actual driver of the restaurant timeline, not the other way around. Midway executive vice president Clayton Freels has said as much directly:

"Together with The Henry and Sparrow Italia, Buck & Rider will create a dynamic collection of culinary-forward restaurants that serve office users, visitors, and the broader Uptown community."

Read that quote for what it is. The restaurants are being positioned to serve the office tenants first. Which means their opening dates track the construction milestones of the buildings those tenants are moving into, not a chef's own timeline or a seasonal food trend.

Here's how that actually breaks down by phase:

  • Fall 2026 (Phase 1, tied to construction completion): The Henry, an all-day concept from Fox Restaurant Concepts, the group behind Flower Child, is set for a 7,000-square-foot Houston debut. Sparrow Italia, an Italian steakhouse from Noble 33 (the group behind Toca Madera), is taking 6,700 square feet as an anchor tenant. Handies Douzo, the fourth location of the Houston hand roll concept from Duckstache Hospitality, with an interior by Gin Design Group, is also on track for later this year, joining the brand's original Heights location plus Montrose and Spring Branch outposts.
  • Fall 2027: Buck & Rider, a Scottsdale-based seafood concept from Hi Noon Hospitality and its first Texas location, is taking a roughly 9,263-square-foot "jewel box" space at the corner of Ambassador Way and Post Oak Boulevard, across from The Annie Café & Bar and Turner's. That's a full year behind the Phase 1 group, despite being announced in the same news cycle.
  • Phase 2, groundbreaking still pending: Élephante and Bar Bambino, two concepts from the Los Angeles-based Wish You Were Here Group, are slated for Phase 2 at 1990 Post Oak Boulevard. Phase 2 isn't expected to break ground until the end of 2026 at the earliest, which means construction alone will likely run into 2028 before either concept can open.

So the honest version of "new restaurants coming to the Galleria this fall" is really three separate arrival windows, and the distance between the earliest and the latest is measured in years, not months.

Eataly is running its own clock, and it isn't the same clock

Separately, and with no connection to the Central Park Post Oak leasing calendar, Eataly is under construction at The Centre at Post Oak, 5000 Westheimer, the same retail center that already houses Marshalls-HomeGoods, Old Navy, Morton's The Steakhouse, and Moxie's Grill and Bar. The build-out is a $11.5 million, 20,050-square-foot commitment, with construction reported to begin in January 2026 and wrap by September 2026.

Worth separating from the Central Park Post Oak conversation entirely: different developer, different lease structure, no relationship to the office-leasing calendar driving The Henry or Sparrow Italia. But the same caution applies. A construction wrap date is when the shell is done, not when a food hall this size is fully staffed, stocked, and seating guests. If you're circling a date on your calendar for opening night, circle "sometime after September," not "September."

What this actually means for your fall

If your plan was to wait for the new wave before booking a reservation somewhere new, here's the realistic order of operations. Wagyu House is the only one you can walk into today. The Henry, Sparrow Italia, and Handies Douzo are the group most likely to open doors before the end of 2026, assuming Phase 1 construction holds to its current schedule. Eataly's timeline runs roughly parallel but independently, with a construction finish targeted for September and an actual opening that will likely trail behind that by some measure of staffing and buildout time. Buck & Rider is a 2027 restaurant no matter how the announcements read today. And Élephante and Bar Bambino are Phase 2 projects that won't even start construction until the end of this year at the earliest, which means treating them as "coming soon" is optimistic by at least two years.

None of this is a complaint about the pace. Construction on a 1.2-million-square-foot office campus doesn't move at restaurant speed, and a credit union headquarters lease is a different kind of commitment than a restaurant lease. But if you live in the Galleria and you've been half-expecting a new dinner rotation by Thanksgiving, the honest read is that you'll get a third of it this year and the rest in installments through 2027.

The upside of understanding the sequence is that you stop waiting on the wrong restaurant. Book Wagyu House now. Keep an eye on Sparrow Italia and The Henry for a late-2026 opening. File Buck & Rider under next year. And stop checking for Élephante until construction has even started.
