Every week of October puts a different corner of Memorial Park under pressure. The Bayou City Art Festival takes over the Picnic Loop. Next, the Corporate 5K fills the Seymour Lieberman Trail. Mountain bike races close parts of Bayou Wilds on certain Saturday mornings. The western portion of the Outer Loop Trail stays closed through all of it, and it won't reopen until 2027.
So the usual fallback changes from week to week. In one alert, the Memorial Park Conservancy suggests the Picnic Loop as a quieter option for the Corporate 5K stretch. That same loop is closed to general park use the week before. If you run, walk or bring kids here from the Memorial Drive corridor, you can plan around this month. It just takes a dated calendar, not habit.
Start with the one closure that doesn't move. Memorial Groves is a $50.5 million Master Plan project. It sits on a narrow strip between the Union Pacific rail line and West Memorial Loop Drive. The site was picked because it holds more archaeological remains of Camp Logan than anywhere else in the park. Camp Logan was the World War I training camp the park was built on. Construction started in spring 2026, and the Conservancy has scheduled completion for late 2027.
While crews work, the western part of the Outer Loop Trail is closed until 2027. The Seymour Lieberman Trail is the roughly three-mile loop around the Clay Family Eastern Glades, the golf course and the tennis center. When work began on Memorial Groves in March, the Conservancy said this trail will stay open during construction. That makes it the long route the construction leaves alone. It also takes the heaviest event traffic.
The Houston Marathon training-season kickoff is Tuesday, October 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roy H. Cullen Timing Track. The Conservancy says to expect more activity around the Running Complex that evening. Evening runners have a firm cutoff all month. The Running Complex and Picnic Loop lots close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 4:30 a.m. The automatic gates still let cars out after closing.
The Bayou City Art Festival runs October 9 to 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, with its entrance on South Picnic Lane. The organizer lists more than 270 national and international artists working in 19 disciplines. The festival's footprint is bigger than those three days. The Picnic Loop is closed to general park use from October 8 through October 12.
Parking is what will catch most regulars off guard. On October 9, part of the Running Complex lot closes for vendor setup. From October 9 to 11, the Picnic Loop, Sports Complex and Fitness Center lots are closed to the public. All other park lots stay open.
If you're going to the festival, adult general admission is $20, a weekend pass is $30, kids 6 to 12 get in for $5, and children five and under are free. The organizer says there's no parking at the festival for general admission. Ticket holders park at Delmar Stadium, 2066 Mangum Road, and ride a shuttle that costs $12 round trip. Riders 17 and under don't need a shuttle pass. VIP tickets are $105 for a day or $150 for the weekend. They include parking and the shuttle, and the Memorial Park Fitness Center serves as the VIP lot.
Once the Picnic Loop reopens, the pressure moves to the north side. Parts of the Clay Family Eastern Glades and some parking lots are reserved for the Chord Energy Houston Corporate 5K from October 16 through October 23. During that window, the Conservancy warns of heavier traffic on the Seymour Lieberman Trail. The races run October 20 to 22, and the start line is open from 4 to 6:30 p.m. each day. Participants loop the Seymour Lieberman Trail and then head to a happy hour in the Eastern Glades. If you usually run that loop after work, you'll share it with race traffic on those three afternoons.
For that week, the Conservancy points to the southside natural-surface trails and the Picnic Loop. Both are good options again by then, because the festival closure ends October 12.
The GHORBA Race Speed Series is back at Bayou Wilds on October 17, October 24 and November 7. On those dates, sections of trail are reserved and some areas close to the public from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. The October 17 race lands inside the Corporate 5K reservation window. So for that one morning, both the south-side singletrack and the Eastern Glades are affected at once.
| Dates | Area affected | Lots affected | Open alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through 2027 | Western Outer Loop Trail | None listed | Seymour Lieberman Trail |
| Oct 6, 6 to 8 p.m. | Running Complex, Cullen Timing Track | Expect heavier use | Other trails |
| Oct 8 to 12 | Picnic Loop | Picnic Loop, Sports Complex, Fitness Center on Oct 9 to 11; part of Running Complex on Oct 9 | All other lots |
| Oct 16 to 23 | Parts of Eastern Glades, heavier Seymour Lieberman traffic | Some lots reserved | Southside natural-surface trails, Picnic Loop |
| Oct 17, Oct 24, Nov 7, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Parts of Bayou Wilds | None listed | Seymour Lieberman Trail, Picnic Loop |
Not everything this month draws a crowd. Several smaller programs inside the park run alongside the big events and work well around them:
October 24 is the busiest single day of the month. It starts with a GHORBA race at Bayou Wilds, then the morning Phenology Walk, and ends with the evening Star Party. Each one is in a different part of the park.
The western Outer Loop closure is the longest inconvenience on this calendar, and it will leave something behind. At the center of Memorial Groves is a grid of nearly 3,000 bald cypress trees, laid out to suggest soldiers standing in formation. The trees will cover 20 continuous acres on both sides of West Memorial Loop Drive. Open lawns will break up the grid where Camp Logan's streets once ran. A visitor center designed by Moody Nolan will sit at the north end. At the south end there will be a picnic pavilion, a lawn and a playground, plus new parking and restrooms at both ends. Earthscape, a custom playground company, detailed the playground's features, including oversized soldiers' helmets, army crates, and a bugle that doubles as a talk tube.
The biggest change for runners is the trail. About 0.7 miles, or 3,600 feet, of the Seymour Lieberman Trail will move farther from West Memorial Loop Drive. Groves trees will be planted between the trail and the road, and new fitness stations will line the trail. Earlier work moved a one-mile segment of the same trail off Memorial Drive and into the trees, and that segment opened in October 2022. That makes this project the next stage of the same rebuild, on the stretch where today's closures sit.
Event dates and park alerts can change. Check the Memorial Park Conservancy's Memorial Groves page, where the alerts are posted, before you head out on any of the dates above.
